About Election Holidays in Chile
Since 1901 presidential elections are declared holidays, as mandated by successive versions of the General Elections law.
Presidential Elections
Presidential elections elect a president, who serves as head of government for a period of four years. There is no limit on how many terms a president can serve.
The president is directly elected by an absolute majority of valid votes. According to the Constitution, presidential elections take place on the third Sunday of November of the year before the incumbent president's term expires. A runoff election, if necessary, takes place on the fourth Sunday following the election.
The president is sworn in on the day the incumbent president's term expires. Since 1990 that day has been March 11th.
Elections were last held on November 19th 2017.
Parliamentary Elections
General elections are held every eight years and are held on the same day as the Presidential elections.
