Shah Abdul Latif (1689 – 1752) was a Sindhi Sufi scholar, mystic, saint, poet, and musician. He is known as the poet of Sindh. He died on January 1st 1752, which was 14 Safar 1165 in the Islamic calendar. This public holiday is observed on 14 Safar.
Traditions of Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai
The three-day ceremony of the Urs (the death anniversary of a Sufi saint) begins with poetry marathons, literature conferences, and other activities to celebrate the poetry of the Sufi saint.
Each year scores of devotees and visitors from all parts of the country travel to Bhitshah to attend the Urs and offer special prayers.
The Urs is one of the few public holidays allowed in Sindh after the provincial government decided to abolish most other public holidays.
All offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations and local councils falling under the Sindh government, except essential services, will remain closed.
