History of King Tupou VI's Birthday
Tupouto'a Lavaka was born on July 12th 1959. He is the youngest son of King Tupou IV who reigned as King of Tonga for 41 years from 1965 until his death in September 2006.
Upon his father's death, Tupouto'a Lavaka's elder brother, George Tupou V, became king, serving until his death in March 2012. As George Tupou V had no eligible heirs, he had previously confirmed his brother as the heir presumptive to the Throne of Tonga.
King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u were crowned in a ceremony conducted at Centenary Church in the Tongan capital, Nuku'alofa, on July 4th 2015.
King Tupou IV was born on July 4th 1918 and his birthday had become observed as a public holiday. This date was adopted by King Tupou VI as his official birthday, meaning the date of the holiday hasn't changed.
According to the Public Holidays Act, the Birthday of the reigning Sovereign of Tonga shall be celebrated on the day it falls, unless it falls on a Sunday in which case it would be celebrated on the next following Monday
