For the past few years, Anambra State Government has declared November 16th as a work-free day.
This is in commemoration of the posthumous birthday of the first President of Nigeria, Dr Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe.
A release is usually issued shortly before the day, stating that the day will be work-free in the state and that workers are expected to stay at home to observe the holiday.
About Azikiwe
Azikiwe was reputed to have led Nigeria to independence on October 1st 1960 and is popularly known as The Great Zik of Africa because of his extraordinary Pan-African vision and commitment.
Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano had in previous years called on the federal government to recognize the date as a nation-wide public holiday, in honour of Azikiwe’s contribution to Nigeria.
