  Summary

Nepal has declared a public holiday to mark the funeral of Subhash Chandra Nembang, a notable politician.

The government of Nepal has declared a public holiday on Thursday September 2023 to mourn the demise of Constituent Assembly Chairperson Subash Chandra Nembang. The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a notice that this day would be a public holiday.

Subhash Chandra Nembang, who served as the Chair of the Constituent Assembly and Vice president of the CPN (UML), will be laid to rest with state honors. Subas Chandra Nembang, who was elected from Ilam-2 in the House of Representatives, passed away in Kathmandu due to a heart attack.

During an emergency cabinet meeting, it was also decided to declare a public holiday on the day of his funeral. Sudhan Kirati, the Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, said the final will be performed on the day of his sons’ arrival from overseas.

Nembang’s family has decided to perform Nembang’s last rites on Thursday September 14th 2023, after the arrival of his two sons from abroad.

In the early hours of September 12th 2023, Subaschandra Nemwang succumbed to a heart attack at his own house and was pronounced dead at TU Teaching Hospital. He was 71 years old.

Active in politics since student days, Nembang was a popular leader. He was the chairperson of the Constituent Assembly—both the first and second ones—from 2008-2012 and then from 2013 to 2015, under whose chair the Constituent Assembly promulgated the constitution on September 20th 2015. Nembang played an important role in delivering the constitution within the September 20th 2015 deadline despite the pressures from various sources to defer the statute promulgation process.
