President Donald J. Trump proclaimed a national Day of mourning to be observed on Wednesday 5 December 2018 to mark the state funeral of former president George H. W. Bush.

How is a National Day of Mourning Observed?

A national Day of mourning has the status of an official national holiday.

This means flags will fly at half-mast, government offices will be closed, and there will be no trading on the Dow Jones or NASDAQ. State government offices in some states will also be closed.

The Post Office will be closed, with no mail deliveries.

The last National Day of Mourning was declared for 2 January 2007 by President George W. Bush to mark the passing of former President Gerald Ford at age 93.

Why is it a National Day of Mourning?

The 41st president died on 30 November 2018, at the age of 94.

While George H. W. Bush only served one term as president, he had been an important political figure for many years, serving as Ronald Reagan's vice-president for eight years.

His state funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral on Wednesday 5 December 2018, beginning at 11am CET.
