The Government has announced a change in the dates for the memorial and funeral services for the late President Hage Geingob.
Initially, it was announced that Friday, February 23rd and Saturday, February 24th 2024 would be the dates for the final memorial and state funeral service, respectively.
In a solemn declaration, President Nangolo Mbumba has since announced that Sunday, the 25th of February 2024, will be a public holiday for Namibia, in honour of the late President Hage Geingob.
As a result, and as per the Public Holidays Act of 1990 (Act 26 of 1990), when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed as a public holiday.
Therefore, Monday February 26th 2024, will be a public holiday. This arrangement is said to allow for the burial of the late President on Sunday February 25th and the memorial service to take place on Saturday February 24th.
Hage Gottfried Geingob was a Namibian politician who served as the third president of Namibia from 2015 until his death in February 2024. Geingob was the first Prime Minister of Namibia from 1990 to 2002, and served as prime minister again from 2012 to 2015.
