The Maldives government announced that Wednesday August 14th 2024 will be a public holiday due to bad weather conditions and heavy rainfall.
Government Spokesperson, Heena Waleed said on X that the decision comes directly from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
She added President Muizzu made the decision due to the heavy rainfall Maldives, with the intention to provide respite to students, employees and travellers.
Heena further affirmed the government is committed to helping the public with potential property damages and other plights amid the worsening weather conditions.
The Maldives Meteorological Center (MET Office) has downgraded the orange alert issued earlier on 14:15hrs of Tuesday afternoon to a yellow alert.
Several islands have experienced floods causing damages while over 230 Male’ City residences reported of floods, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
