A day of mourning in Maharashtra for the passing of legendary singer, Lata Mangeshkar.

Lata Mangeshkar, one of India's most beloved singers, has been cremated in Mumbai with full state honours.

Mangeshkar, whose voice was the soundtrack to hundreds of Bollywood films, died aged 92 on Sunday February 6th 2022.

The Maharashtra Government has declared a public holiday on Monday February 7th 2022, and the West Bengal government announced a half-day holiday.

The Maharashtra state government notification said: “Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2022. Her death has caused an immense loss to the music, art world and it’s the great loss of the nation. To pay tribute to this legendary singer, a public holiday is being declared in the state on Monday 7th February 2022.” The notification added that the state is exercising the powers vested in it under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881.

Note that the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will function as usual on February 7th.

The Government of India announced two-day national mourning in memory of the melody queen. “Two days of state mourning will be observed today and tomorrow during which the National Flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India as a mark of respect to Lata Mangeshkar. State honours to be accorded to her,” Government of India said in a statement on Sunday. The national flag will fly at half-mast for two days as a mark of respect.

The Goa government has declared three days State Mourning, from February 6th to February 8th, while Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Sikkim have announced two days of State Mourning.

Also, Karnataka has announced two-day mourning in honour of the doyen of Indian music and Bharat Ratna awardee Lata Mangeshkar."In honour of the departed soul, there will be Statewide mourning on February 6 and 7. During this period, there will not be any official, public entertainment programme. The Indian tricolour will fly half-mast," the order read.

As a Bollywood playback singer, Lata Mangeshkar's voice was the soundtrack to hundreds of Indian films - and to countless more lives. Her songs were played at weddings, funerals and national events, her career spanned more than seven decades.
