The Kurdistan Regional Government has officially declared Wednesday, March 5th 2025, a public holiday across all government institutions in the Kurdistan Region. The decision commemorates the historic 1991 Uprising.
Normal working hours will resume on Thursday, March 6th 2025.
The 1991 uprising, also known as the major uprising, was spearheaded by the people of the Kurdistan Region against Saddam Hussein’s Baath regime, with significant contributions from the Peshmerga forces who transitioned from the mountains to join the urban populace.
The 1991 Kurdish uprising marked a pivotal moment in regional politics, catalyzed by several factors including the oppressive actions of the Baath regime, particularly its chemical attacks on Kurdish civilians and Peshmerga forces following the end of the Iran-Iraq War in 1988. The regime's subsequent defeat in Kuwait created fertile ground for the uprising.
