When is Pancasila Day?
Pancasila Day is public holiday in Indoensia on June 1st each year. It celebrates the birthday of Pancasila, the state ideology of Indonesia.
History of Pancasila Day
Pancasila was introduced during a speech by Indonesia's founding father and first president Sukarno on June 1st 1945 prior to Indonesia gaining independence. The ideology of the speech formed the official, foundational philosophical theory of the Indonesian state.
Pancasila means 'five principles'. These five principles are inseparable and interrelated:
- A Divinity that is an ultimate unity,
- A just and civilized humanity,
- The national unity of Indonesia,
- Democracy predicated on the inherent wisdom of unanimity arising from deliberation among popular representatives, and
- Social justice for all Indonesian people (in Indonesian "Keadilan Sosial bagi seluruh Rakyat Indonesia").
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo made the date into a national holiday through Presidential Decree No.24/2016 in 2016. The first observation of the holiday was on June 1st 2017.
