About Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's Birthday
The Punjab government has declared Saturday May 1st 2021, as a gazetted holiday on the occasion of the 400th Prakash Purab of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji.
The day has also been notified under the Negotiable Instrument Act 1881. This means that banks and other commercial establishments would also remain closed.
Guru Teg Bahadur was the ninth of ten Gurus (Prophets) of the Sikh religion. He was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India in 1621 and was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh guru. Not just a principled and fearless warrior, he was a learned spiritual scholar and poet whose 115 hymns are included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the main text of Sikhism.
