When is MHIP Day?
MHIP Day is a regional public holiday in the Indian state of Mizoram on July 6th each year.
This holiday commemorates the foundation of the biggest women’s organization in Mizoram on this day in 1974.
History of MHIP Day
The Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) was established on July 6th 1974, while Mizoram was still a Union Territory. The name literally means binding women together.
The MHIP is one of the biggest voluntary organization in Mizoram and the only female-orientated NGO.
The basic principles of the MHIP are based on its philanthropic social work. Its aims include creating a state of welfare in which every individual is cared for, irrespective of caste or creed. However, as a female-led organisation, most activities focus on improving the lives of women and children.
One of their main challenges has been to convince people to change traditional systems and customs that suppress women.
The MHIP headquarter is located at Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram.
