When is Chahhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti?
Chahhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is an official state-wide holiday in the Indian state of Maharashtra on February 19th.
Also known as Shiv Jayanti or Shivaji Jayanti, this holiday marks the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the first Chhatrapati and founder of the Maratha Empire.
History of Chahhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti
Shivaji was born in about 1630 in Pune, Maharashtra. Although scholars disagree on his year and date of birth, the Government of Maharashtra doesn't have such concerns and always observe this holiday on February 19th.
Shivaji was born to be a natural leader and fighter, seizing forts while still a teenager.
In a time of great political upheaval in the region, Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. In 1674, he was formally crowned as the Chhatrapati (emperor).
Shivaji revived ancient Hindu political traditions and court conventions and promoted the usage of Marathi and Sanskrit, rather than the Persian language, in court and administration.
A progressive and sensible leader, he was known for his civil administration and his bravery and military tactics with which he won numerous wars against the Mughals.
Shivaji was called the 'Mountain Rat' because of his awareness of the geography of his land, and guerrilla tactics like raiding, ambushing and surprise attacks on his enemies.

Shivaji is known as the Father of Indian Navy, as he was the first to realise the importance of having a naval force, and established a navy and forts on the coastline to defend the Konkan side of Maharashtra.
Shivaji's legacy began to take on increased importance with the emergence of the Indian independence movement, as many elevated him as a proto-nationalist and hero of the Hindus. His birthday is celebrated with pomp and great enthusiasm in the state of Maharashtra.

Banks will be closed today. Maharashtra also observes a "dry day" on Shiv Jayanti. As a large number of people celebrate the festival, the state government bans the sale of alcohol at shops, bars and pubs. All schools and colleges will also remain closed.
