Bir Bikram Kishore Debbarman was a Maharaja (Ruler) of Tripura. He was born on August 19th 1908 into the Manikya dynasty which had ruled Tripura since 1280. He became the 184th and penultimate Maharaja of the Kingdom of Tripura in 1923 and ruled until his death in May 1947.
His full official name was Colonel His Highness Bisam-Samar-Bijojee Mahamopadhyaya Pancha-Srijukta Maharaja Sri Sri Bir Bikram Kishore Deb Barman Manikya Bahadur.
He was succeeded by his son, Maharaja Kirit Bikram Kishore Deb Barman, who was the nominal king for two years until the state's merger into India in 1949.
Recent years have seen a revival in interest in the Royal history of the state and Bir Bikram Kishore Debbarman is still revered in the state due to his legacy as he was instrumental in Tripura's transition to modernity in the years leading up to Indian independence. For instance, he oversaw the building of the first airport in Tripura, which is today the second busiest airport in the entire northeast.
