About Election Day in Ghana
President Akufo-Addo has declared Monday, December 7th 2020, as Public Holiday.
It comes after the Inter-party Advisory committee and the Electoral Commission petitioned him to declare the day as such as Ghana goes to the polls.
The President said that the holiday is to help “facilitate the conduct of the election in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, help ensure strict observance of COVID-19 safety protocols on election day, and enable registered voters to exercise their franchise in safety and with minimal inconvenience.”
The President, through his executive powers, has therefore cancelled Friday December 4th as a holiday, which was meant to observe Farmers Day.
The president, who serves as head of state and head of government, is directly elected for up to two four-year terms.
Members of Ghana’s unicameral, 275-seat Parliament are elected directly in single-member constituencies to serve four-year terms.
