When is the Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the King?
Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the King is a three-day national holiday in Bhutan, observed from February 21st - 23rd each year.
Many of the public holidays in this Himalayan state relate to the monarchy and this holiday celebrates the birthday of the current king.
History of Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the King
Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the current Druk Gyalpo or "Dragon King" of the Kingdom of Bhutan was born on February 21st 1980.
He is the eldest son of the fourth Dragon King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
After his father abdicated the throne, he became the fifth Dragon King of the Wangchuck dynasty on December 9th 2006. His public coronation didn't take place until November 2008, as that date was seen as auspicious as it marked 100 years of the monarchy in Bhutan.
In May 2011, the King announced his engagement to Jetsun Pema. They were married in October 2011.
