About Baba Banda Singh Bahadur ji Birthday
The Punjab government has declared a public holiday on the occasion of the 350th birth anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur ji on October 16th 2020.
Banda Singh Bahadur, also called Lachman Das, Lachman Dev, or Madho Das, (born 1670, Rajauri [India]—died June 1716, Delhi), was the first Sikh military leader to wage an offensive war against the Mughal rulers of India, thereby temporarily extending Sikh territory.
At age 15 he left home to become a Hindu ascetic, and was given the name "Madho Das". He established a monastery at Nānded, on the bank of the river Godāvarī, where in September 1708 he was visited by, and became a disciple of, Guru Gobind Singh, who gave him his new name of Banda Bahadur.
A spokesperson of the Punjab government said that all the offices of Punjab government, boards, corporations, and educational institutions would remain closed on the occasion.
