History of Uzbek Constitution Day
Soon after the break up of the Soviet Union in 1990, work started on replacing the constitution of the Uzbek SSR which had been adopted in February 1937.
For over two years, the Constitutional Commission had been working on drafting the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan was adopted at the XI session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan on December 8th 1992.
The Constitution, the main law of the state, is the core of the entire legal system of Uzbekistan and determines the meaning and content of other laws. It is a firm foundation for the democratic development of the Uzbek state.
This is an important and popular holiday in Uzbekistan and a time for citizens to show their patriotic side, as cities and towns are adorned with the national flag.
It has become a recent tradition that the Uzbek President pardons or eases the sentences of many convicts as part of the commemorations of Constitution Day.
