Speaking to journalists in Kampala in November 2023, the minister for ICT and national guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi said by May 2024, the government will have raised the required resources of over Shs130 billion to conduct the enumeration exercise across the country.
“Government has marked the night of May 9th as the new census night preceding the actual population enumeration that will commence on May 10th,” Dr Baryomunsi said.
According to him, May 10th 2024 shall be a public holiday and “the process will take a period of at least 10 days.”
In July 2023, Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), the body in charge of the exercise postponed the census originally scheduled for August 2023 due to delays in the procurement of the required logistics, especially the tablets needed to facilitate the digital approach to the exercise.
The postponement of the sixth national census since independence was also predetermined by UBOS’ failure to secure Shs134 billion from the finance ministry is grappling with the challenges of raising the money amidst looming funding cuts from the international community as a result of the recently passed Anti-Homosexuality Law.
The last national census was conducted in August 2014.
