When is Judsheetal?

The Judsheetal festival is celebrated on April 14th in Terai-Madhesh and the Mithila region.

The festival is celebrated along with the beginning of the new year per the Bikram Sambat calendar.

Jude Sheetal, otherwise called Pahila or Pohela Boishakh, is additionally the birthday of Raja. Shailesh, the lord of the Himalayan locale of Mithila.

The day is celebrated as the Maithili New Year and follows the Nirayanam vernal equinox. April 14th denotes the primary day of the customary Tirhuta Panchang and the blessed new year for Maithili individuals.

Traditions of Judsheetal

During the festival, elders sprinkle water on the heads of the young and bless them with good health and long life.

On this day, the fields are also irrigated. Cultural experts say that the main purpose of this festival is to provide respite to plants and humans who are longing for water due to the excessive sun heat.

Judsheetal’s traditions are believed to “cool the mind” and promote success, particularly for children. In some areas, the day involves playful water fights.

Special dishes are also prepared as part of the celebrations. All the food dishes cooked during this festival are offered to the family deities. Emphasis is placed on the use of curd in this festival, which is celebrated amid the rising of summer.
