When is Constitution Day?

Constitution Day is a public holiday in the Kyrgyz Republic on May 5th each year.

This holiday marks the adoption of the Constitution on this day in 1993.

History of Constitution Day

In 1991, the Republic of Kyrgyzstan gained its independence from the Soviet Union. This meant that the Constitution of the Kyrgyz SSR, which was adopted in 1978 would need to be replaced.

Eighteen months later, on May 5th, 1993, the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic was adopted. On that day, the official name of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan became the Kyrgyz Republic.

Since the adoption of the Constitution, there have been several changes and amendments, it was edited three times; in February 2003, November 2006 and January 2007.

In September, 2007, The Constitutional Court overturned the action of the last two editions of the Constitution. In turn, the Constitution amended in February 2003 was restored.

On October 21st 2007, by the Decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, a referendum was held, which adopted a new constitution proposed by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, K. Bakiev, which was signed by him on October  23rd 2007.

On June 27th 2010 a national referendum on a new constitution took place. The referendum passed with 90% of the votes in favour and in October 2010 there were parliamentary elections, whereby Kyrgyzstan became the only parliamentary republic in Central Asia.
