Peshawa Hawramani, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), has announced that the KRG has declared Monday November 20th 2023 as a public holiday in all its institutions and non-governmental educational academies due to the high probability of torrential rains.

Hawramani urged everyone to stay away from rivers or areas with rising water levels and not to use intercity roads unless necessary. Civil defense teams will be on standby in case of emergency.

Iraq’s Nineveh and Qadisiyah provinces also declared public holidays because of the weather for all governmental institutions apart from security and health, and civil defense services, as well as schools for grade 12 students.

Provincial authorities in Najaf, Diwaniyah, Samawah, Dhi Qar, Karbala, Maysan, Babil and Wasit, areas in central and southern Iraq, also announced a public holiday.

Post-rain floods are a perennial issue in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole, caused in large part by insufficient infrastructure, including inefficient or poorly maintained urban rainwater management, and sewage systems.
