When is Mother's Day in Costa Rica?
Mother's Day (Spanish: Día de la Madre) is a national holiday in Costa Rica on August 15th each year. If the holiday falls on a weekend, the public holiday may be moved to the following Monday as a way to promote local tourism.
Traditions of Mother's Day
This is one of the most important days of the year in Costa Rica. The date is different from Mother's Day in other countries as it is celebrated on the Feast of the Assumption. The Assumption relates to the Virgin Mary being assumed from her earthly life to join her son into heaven. The day is seen as a joyous event and is Mary's divine birthday.
Traditionally, families come together on Mother’s Day for a special lunch that includes the entire extended family - as Mother's Day involves giving thanks to mothers, grandmothers and wives. As with other Mother’s Days, celebrations revolve around giving presents.
A recent report showed that Costa Ricans spend 11% more in the week of Mother's Day, underlining its importance.
